hey 2020!

Not everyone knows this about me, but I used to be a goal coach.

I started my own goal-setting workshop back in 2016, self-published a workbook to go along with it, and taught 500+ people my favorite goal-setting strategies. I don't regularly host my workshops anymore, but I'm still a goal enthusiast at heart.

I recently stumbled upon a tattered list of goals I wrote back in 2015 and was pleased to discover I'd accomplished quite a few of them in the last five years, such as leaving academia, getting fit, becoming a mom, getting fit again (just in time for baby #2!), starting a podcast, buying a dream house, freelancing for magazines, catching the eye of literary agent, and consistently reading the Bible, to name a few. Other goals (like welcoming a second child, traveling to Italy, and officially getting a book published) are on the horizon. And, of course, sprinkled in there are many mistakes, setbacks, regrets, and still-to-be-determineds...but all in all, it's been an amazing five years.


Since January 1st is almost upon us, I figured this would be a good time to join millions of other goal-getters in reflecting on what I want to accomplish this year, writing it down, and doing my best to make it happen. I know many people fail (myself included) and that has led to some seasonal cynicism, but I choose to embrace furious optimism instead. It's worked pretty well for me so far 😉


So without further ado, here are my 2020 goals:


Goal 1: Read six chapters of the Bible a day.

I'm doing this challenge encouraged by Rachel Jankovic, and I really like her approach to what many women (especially women with young children) consider to be a daunting task.




Goal 2: Consistently exercise and reintegrate boxing into my workout routine.

Guys, I miss combatives SO much, and I cannot wait to be able to do more than walk on a treadmill and lift weights. (Currently, if I try anything more than that, my body decides it's time for labor, and we don't want that just yet.) Realistically, this goal will have to wait until Sofia is about a month old, but that's okay. I've got other things I can do in the meantime.


Note: I personally don't measure my fitness progress via weight lost. I measure it by time spent working out and visible results.

Goal 3: Stay on budget (looking at you, grocery and restaurant column.)

Jeff and I are pretty good at staying on budget (one thing that helps a lot is that he's figured out how to get all our flights for free!), but we still need to be better about eating at home. So, after some strategizing, I *think* may I have perfected our ALDI grocery list and daily meal plans...but I'll keep you posted. In fact, I'll dedicate a whole post to it for my meal-prepping enthusiasts.


If my plan works, this $160 trip to ALDI should last about two and half weeks 🤞 And it's paleo-ish.

I've got some other sub-goals, like researching alternative forms of education (cuz I'm really not enthused about public school at the moment), reading more fiction, and reaching my daily writing quotas, but I think those will be easier to integrate into my routine than the three I've listed.
